Ive been pondering the social psychology of an online phenomenon that seems dominate some forums and has popped up here a few times recently. Someone posts an article about someone doing something we dont like, and everyone is supposed to pile on the hate. Maybe its just common, everyday projection. I wonder how it makes people feel when they type an insult about someone they dont know and click send. Does it relieve guilt? Does if feel like beating up a bad person, giving a righteous hero boost to the ego? Theres something powerful going on with this ubiquitous practice.
