Ive been preparing a talk Im supposed to give next week to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders from low-income families about the value of a career in art/advertising/marketing, and will be suggesting they not dismiss the basics — Dont toss what you learn in math; youll still need to figure out agents percentages, project earnings & expenses, calculate the area on a canvas.... Get a job that requires interaction with customers, bc you have to know how to listen and talk to people in a position to buy from you.... Keep up with your humanities bc theres nothing worse than the cliche of the inarticulate artist. Van Gogh belonged to his century; you belong in this one.
