Ive been putting this off because I was feeling nervous about it, but I am feeling comfortable with my decision now. I have thought a lot about this and I have decided that I am not going to buy any Christmas presents for anyone this year. I hope that those of you I usually buy for are not upset or think that I don’t love you. I am just not up to it and am hoping that maybe we can find another way to celebrate Christmas and each other. Maybe I will return to my usual ways next year, but this year I decided that I want to try something new. I want to hold on to the traditions that matter to me: sending holiday cards, Dave’s dad reading ‘T’was the Night Before Christmas’ to the kids, eating donuts with my parents and going to Christmas Eve mass and watch my mom shamelessly sway to the music en espanol. For now I know that this year the following things interest me: listening to the Nutcracker Suite in front of the fireplace and eating pasta with my fam, perhaps going to see a live nativity scene, making the famous Spritz cookies at Grandma and Poppas house with all of the Kennedy, Haydon, Hampls, Philippians, and Bundrens, hiking Madonna mountain for a special mass with my dad, watching cheesy holiday horror movies with my brother and Dave, volunteering with Mabel at the animal and/or homeless shelter, taking my niece and nephew to the movies and ice skating, having a hot toddy with my sis in law, taking Otis for long walks to look at the holiday decorations in our neighborhood and say hi to all of our friends in the neighborhood, not being stressed out waiting in long lines at the stores swiping my credit card time after time. I find a lot of joy in giving and am looking for different ways to do it. If you have any advice I’d love to hear it. I hope that this will be a season of renewal, of celebrating our cherished loved ones, contemplation, and of being thankful. I love you. Love, Clare
