Ive been reading about a Twin Peaks comeback for years. The problem with doing a sequel (a prequel, Fire Walk With Me came to theaters in 1992) is that most people will be looking for conclusions to the many cliffhangers with which the series ended. But true fans (Peaks freaks like myself) know that solving mysteries wasnt what the show was about. Quite the opposite. Twin Peaks is a work of modern art- bizarre and needlessly confusing to most, beautiful and intriguing to a small pack of loyal viewers. Hence the cult following despite the shows dwindling ratings in season two. And more to the point, answers close the door to interpretation, the hallmark of modern art. If there ever was a jump the shark moment, it was when the identity of Laura Palmers murderer was divulged, a move which was pushed by network execs. Of course even then, the answer only lead to more mystery and eventually a puzzling, and for many, unsatisfying, finale. Im as interested as anyone to see how the Twin Peaks story plays out, but Im equally prepared if it doesnt. In any contemporary manner, at least. Anyone who hopes this production will smooth out plot wrinkles and satisfy their curiosity is bound to be disappointed once again by Frost and Lynch. God I hope so.
