Ive been seeing a lot of articles on how Amazons review system works. Reviewers dont understand how the system works for authors. This is how I look at something I want to review: Do i want to help this product or hurt it? If a book has a 4-star average and I want to help it, i give it a 5. If I am on the fence, I give it a neutral 4 which solidifies the consensus. If I want to hurt the product i give a 3 or below, based on how angered i was by the quality of the product. As you can see, its very easy to hurt a book, and difficult to help it. If something has a 4.8 average and 30 reviews, adding a five-star brings it up to 4.8065 (still 4.8 as far as the system shows). Adding a 1-star brings it down to 4.6774 (system now shows 4.7 but its very vulnerable to being 4.6 if it loses another .0275) You wouldnt think these fractions make a difference but they do, and affect all Amazons algorithms for that title. So if you get ticked off at some book just know you have the power to wish it into the cornfield. Then decide if youre really that kind of person and whether the author slash human being on the other end of it really deserves the destruction you can wield.
