Ive been studying all day long. Either for an online test that I intend to take soon, or the history of the English Kings between the age of William the Conqueror and the 1300s. Of course part of that saga is the story of poor King John. Perhaps you remember the evil Prince John from the tale of Robin Hood. Well, Prince John (later King of England) was much maligned for his high taxes. In the story of Robin Hood, the erstwhile hero robs the taxman to give to the poor peasants whom John is brutally crushing in order to line his own pockets. Eventually the good King Richard (the brother of John) returns from crusading to arrest John and set the country to right. In reality the high taxes were to support all of Richards wars, and to ransom him from the Duke of Warsaw when Richard behaved like an idiot; travelling around with no guards and for some strange reason working in an inn in Vienna while trying to get back to England from the Middle East. This let his rival; the Duke, capture him specifically to ransom him off. When Richard got back he again behaved like a fool and got himself killed in a needless battle over honor where he was shot with a crossbow. On his deathbed he made John his successor, thereby refuting the Robin Hood version of history. Later John made literally everyone mad at him including the Pope, nearly got himself overthrown, and in his despondency, drank some bad beer, got dysentery, and essentially died of an extreme case of diarrhea. Just in case you want a reward for reading all of that, I submit the following: youtube/watch?v=DuBb3LirBe0
