Ive been tagged by the lovely Gayle Pazerski Stephenson to share 10 books or plays that have stayed with me in some way. Rules: Dont take more than a few minutes, and dont think too hard. They dont have to be the ‘right’ or ‘great’ literature, just ones that have affected you in some way. Without further ado, my list: 1. Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris. This is the first David Sedaris book I ever read, and I was immediately smitten. He is my favorite author and, yes, you may have heard, he once gave me a Sunchip, which I still have in my jewelry box. 2. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger: I don’t know what it is about this story, but I’ve never been so engrossed in a book. I was crushed when I finished it because I wasn’t ready to leave the characters’ world just yet. (Side note: Definitely read this before you even attempt to watch the movie.) 3. The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls: I was enchanted by the story of Jeannette’s strange childhood and her writing style. 4. Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger: Read this for the first time the summer after high school graduation. Have re-read it several times since. I relate to Holden and his hatred of “phonies.” 5. Angelhead by Greg Bottoms: The most visceral and haunting book I’ve ever read. The images painted by Bottoms of his brother’s descent into madness stick to my brain like glue. I have Lori Jakiela to thank for introducing me to this book and the next one on my list. 6. Fun Home by Alison Bechdel: This is written as a graphic novel, but the genre is actually creative nonfiction. The way Bechdel meticulously recreates the scenes from her life are unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. 7. Bossy Pants by Tina Fey: Tina Fey is my spirit animal. I hope she writes another book soon. On a related note, I’m super pumped to read Amy Poehler’s book coming out next month. 8. The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks: Brains are extremely bizarre and magical, which Oliver Sacks makes abundantly clear in this book that looks at exceptional patients throughout his career as a neurologist. 9. Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America by Barbara Ehrenreich: How does the average minimum wage worker live in the United States? This journalist goes undercover as a maid, Walmart employee, fast food worker, among other roles, to expose their harsh reality. 10. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer: I actually just read this a few months ago, but I can tell it will stick with me for a long, long time. The writing is impeccable and the characters and their stories are unforgettable. Here are the 10 bookworms I invite to join me in this lil meme: Jonny Blevins, Maggie Pahos, Jossie Cee, Jessica Ritchie, Lauren Gibaldi Mathur, Meghan Holohan, Katie Scarlett Brandt, Megan Anthony, Sara Wozniak, and Carrie Elizabeth.
