Ive been thinking about leadership and what people are willing to - TopicsExpress

Ive been thinking about leadership and what people are willing to do for their leader when the leader earns their respect rather than assumes respect because of title or rank. I thought of this story of a young officer in command of a special unit. He was given command because of his scholastic achievement. He had no experience in the field. No combat experience. Had never had men die under his command nor saved them. Well this officer got in heat of combat, made some bad decisions, got in an ambush and his men left him to die. But then I remember this other story... must have been some war movies I was watching... This officer came up through the ranks. He had multiple tours of duty. He had been wounded in battle. Earned medals for his valor and layed his life down for his men time and time again. He too found himself in the midst of a bad decision... but in his case... his men believed in him so much they fought, they fought, and fought and fought until they turned the tides and ultimately turned their commanding officers bad decision into the right one. I guess that goes back to a saying again that I friend of mine shared. A leader is someone you want to follow... and I will add... you have to believe in them to do that.
