Ive been thinking about my grandfather lately. Maybe its because it was Christmas 14 years ago when he was in the hospital in FL, just a few months before he passed away. That was an odd Christmas. Being in FL during the holidays is always weird, since theres no snow or chill in the air. But that year, complicated with his illness and my mothers grief, was especially surreal. But its not my grandfathers demise thats been on my mind, its his life. Specifically, his life owning and operating a lingerie store on Broadway in Manhattan in the 1980s. I grew up in that store, hiding in the racks, playing make believe in the storage rooms, and leaping into the mammoth piles of bras and panties the way some kids jump into piles of raked leaves. It was a weird and wonderful place to have a childhood, and surely instilled in me an awe, respect, and reverence of women and the female form that obviously has affected many of my choices since then. I wish Pop was alive today, to see the wild world I have claimed for my own, and the magnificent people Ive met along the way. I think hed be thrilled, and I hope hed be proud.
