Ive been thinking about something lately. (Dangerous, I know). Ive read several blog posts lately concerning the topic, what not to say to adoptive/foster parents. Most of them site things like Which ones are your real children and Which ones are yours. They include what you mean to say or ask. I suppose it is true that we can be careless in our phrasing of questions. That we sometimes ask intrusive questions. That we should be more sensitive, less intrusive. But I have a different perspective for you to consider. What if we as the receiver of such questions were less sensitive. What if we were to just respond to the spirit of the speaker (because lets face it 99.9% of the questions/statements are well intentioned). What if we used the opportunity to share our hearts and passion for our children with the speaker? What if we just answered the question we know is being asked instead of being offended by the words we hear? After all, who among us has never asked a dumb question?
