Ive been thinking ... about the various posts Ive read this weekend either in praise of the great turnout for the various downtown activities in Batesville, and other noting their disappointment in how locals do not support Batesvilles downtown merchants and activities. Ill start by noting for me personally, it was an extremely busy weekend --- just as it has been an extremely busy summer. Someone noted that with the school vacation period being shortened to approximately 8 weeks --- families are suddenly running many directions trying to ensure their kids play ball, get to their soccer or football practice, are competitive swimmers/divers, learn from their Bible Summer Camp, enter their county and possibly their state 4-H projects, attend the county and state fairs ... and the list goes on. As one who has never been blessed with children --- I have no idea how parents do it all! My life is quite simple ... but my time is still limited between working full-time for the Sisters, part-time at a local funeral home, serving as president of the local historical society, secretary of the Kiwanis, chairperson of the water and gas utility, a member of the RCCF marketing committee, volunteering time with various other organizations, while trying to take care of my home by myself ... lets just say that dust bunnies have found a home ... and Ive become okay with that. During the last week I was helping the Historical Society with their rummage sale that was held at the Community Church of Batesville as a part of the downtown festivities. We were there Wednesday - Saturday, and lots of folks came to shop and chat. There were times that we wished more folks would visit our sale ... but overall we are thrilled with the new friends we made and the additional dollars in our coffers. I left the sale for a while on Saturday morning to open the Historical Museum for welcomed early visitors and provided a tour to share with them our two floors of exhibits. Then when the days host arrived, I left and dropped my car off at Giesting Financial so the Oldenburg Academy Girls Soccer Team could wash it while I visited the downtown Farmers Market --- and all the extra vendors that were there are part of the Batesville Bash. Just as I usually do each Saturday, I returned with great fruits and veggies for the week, plus some flowers for my table, and with the Batesville Bash vendors, I found a beautiful hand-made necklace! By 12:30 I needed to return home with my treasurers so I could shower and be ready for a relatives wedding at 2:30 in Oldenburg. The reception went well into the evening, but on my way home I drove through the downtown area and was thrilled to see so many people at the outdoor concert. Okay Sue ... is there a moral to this blabber ... yes there is. Im thankful for all the downtown opportunities that were offered us this weekend. As a single person with a relatively simple lifestyle --- even I could not participate in everything - but greatly appreciate that so much is happening in our downtown. In the end - its all about the choices we make. ...its about what we value ... and how we spend our time. I hope we continue to have exciting weekends in our downtown area ... and that each of us will choose to spend some of our precious time, and dollars supporting our farmers, local merchants and artists. Dollars spent locally support our local economy ... and if we want to make a difference - lets start locally. Okay - Im off my soap box and will resume chasing dust bunnies!
