Ive been thinking alot about all the problems we face here in the US with all of the recent stories of race and police misconduct. My question to everyone who believes the issue is about race is, do you believe those who you say are racist truly know that they discriminate or is it an unconscious racism? I actually believe it is unconscious. Consider this. Our correctional programs are highly populated with African Americans. News of gun violence, drug related problems, fighting, etc is projected by the media as showing African American males as criminals. Unfortunately, this conditions our brains thinking that Black males are dangerous. Keep in mind, this is a generalization. I do think there are some true racists who know it but dont say it. But if you dont believe you are a racist, you dont want to be told you are, right? Nor do you accept it. As a matter of fact, your brain automatically shuts out the possibility. Furthermore, not only does the media have a strong influence on non-black, but I feel it has a huge influence on black men as well. The crap thats played on the radio, the movies that portray black males as villains. Lets not deny the fact that crime is heavy in communities heavily populated by African Americans. Instead of excepting that as the norm, maybe we need to ask ourselves why. its cause and effect. We put so much of out focus on the effect without trying to identify the cause. In order to stop discrimination, we need to focus on the cause and fix it. We are all products of our environment. We need to stop saying this is or is not about race. This question has divided us as a nation. And its obvious it will always be a debate. But we cannot criticize some for disagreeing without asking the question.. Why do you think that?
