Ive been to more than 500 games at Wrigley and another more than 200 at the old Tiger Stadium, as well as a few dozen games at ballparks all over the country. Ive seen some amazing things, among them 2 of the longest home runs ever hit. The first was a shot by Dave Kingman that didnt just clear the left field wall or clear Waveland. Av, the street behind the wall. His 1976 shot landed on the third floor porch of a house on Kenmore, 3 houses down from Waveland. The house is 530 feet from home plate. Kingmans blast landed on the third floor porch. Many estimate the ball travelled 600 feet. The second moon shot I saw was a Kirk Gibson drive that cleared the right field upper deck at the old Tiger Stadium, making Gibson just eighth player to clear upper deck, and landed on the roof of a lumber warehouse across the street. The shot was officially measured at 560 feet, though many feel it travelled farther. Both of these homers were right up there with The Babe. Either or both could have been longer, but theres no way MLB would take the record from Ruth and give it to either one of these guys, both of whom were, to put it mildly, jerks. A quick note on the Kingman blast. On his trot Kingman, never held up as a model of grace, tripped over home plate and dislocated his shoulder, putting him on the 60 day DL.
