Ive been trying to hold back my thoughts on the NYPD situation. I havent lived in NY for a long time. Im there several times a year for work and friends. I love the city. Respect the cops. But its not my city anymore. Watching from LA, Im dismayed at the at the whole thing, but come down on the side of this NYT editorial, which says to the NYPD enough is enough. De Blasio, who has not managed this as well as he might have since it burst, has nothing to do with a Hispanic and Chinese cop being murdered. I believe the cops did hijack two grief-laden funerals. Sworn public servants are in the midst of a huge work slow down if not stoppage endangering public safety while pouting. Ironically, of course, crime hasnt gone up (think about that for a minute). So lets agree: have another summit with a brokered agenda - maybe by the governor or president if thats what it takes; get Al Sharpton out of the mix; get PBA head Lynch out of the mix - or at least off the front lines; De Blasio, eat some damn crow and take active visible steps to make this better; cops, promise to serve as you were hired until this is resolved. If cops dont like how its resolved they can relocate to a city that needs cops - everyone of them does. See the NY Post piece by curmudgeon Bob McManus below. See the WSJ op-ed. They both leave almost all of this at De Blasios door. And even if theyre right (which theyre not), its no excuse for cops not doing their jobs and behaving disrespectfully at funerals. Or they can simply keep acting the jackass like the cop in the video below who injured himself horsing around sitting on the hood of a moving cop car. Grow up, everyone.
