Ive been trying to play nice and bite my tongue but here are my thoughts on Jose Antonio Vargas. As an organizer from the Rio Grande Valley I find his publicity stunt insulting and hurtful. Before today my news feed was flooded of RGV community members saying, Going to work at the shelter who wants to come, We need X things at the shelter today, The Shelter posted they are in need of more volunteers today. Now all I see is HELP Jose Antonio Vargas Help him with what? Even CNN openly stated they are not going to deport him. He has a huge National Organization backing him up not to mention lawyers etc. As my friends have posted: An articulate attorney just said this strategy is 100 percent manufactured to exploit child refugee crisis to expand deferred action for all. Great goal on its own, but refugee children would not benefit from it. Since the 5 year continuously residing principle in the policy formation would exclude almost all of these refugee kids... i have to admit that it takes guts to do what he did and to do it with the national organization backing him up that has a track record of throwing the undocumented community under the bus is courageous; i just wish his act of valor was more strategic and in line with the folks on the ground doing the work of authentically ridin with the refugeekids... Of course it was manufactured! EVERY TIME I have worked with people not from the Valley and asked them to come down I ALWAYS discuss the checkpoint with them.. And every time they have left the valley without being arrested and able to go back to their homes. These are just regular undocumented folks without an entire camera crew. Its hard to believe he was working with several organizations that are either in the RGV or work with the RGV community and NO ONE mentioned the check point BEFORE he came!? It is the NUMBER ONE thing any organizer from the valley mentions to others. In the end, I just want to see my news feed flooded with who is going to volunteer with the kids again. I want my community to realize we HAVE HAD a strong voice before Jose Antonio Vargas came he didnt give it to us. These REFUGEE children need YOU not JAV. They are being deported, JAV will not. #Priorities
