Ive been using a Synology DiskStation NAS to stream music to various devices around the house several months now. As well as a couple of high res players, my set-up also includes an Android Smartphone where I use BubbleUPnP as the client. Ive had a pretty reasonable degree of success but, until now, two things have been really bugging me about it: Firstly, I simply couldnt get gapless playback to work - most annoying for all those Prog concept albums! Second I have a large number of flacs ripped at high resolution (24 bit, 48k or in some cases 96k) and they refuse to play on my smartphone (not too surprisingly.) Today I stumbled across the solution to both issues and it was surprisingly easy: BubbleUPnP also do a Server which sits on top of many platform-native media servers (in my case Synologys Media Server package) to do on the fly transcoding and caching. It also provides real gapless playback (huzzah!) and transcodes to a format that my phone is happy with. Im very impressed with how easy it is to set up (required Java on my NAS, but Synology have a packaged Java manager to do that) and with how well it all works.
