Ive concentrated on the many positives of last night, but those of you who know me well will know how the little negatives are the ones that eat me up. So, Id like to say a huge thank you to Mr Noisy for not only refusing to stop talking when artists were performing, but for telling me after the show that he felt upset about the wave of hatred that came from the rest of the audience. Apparently, unless we display a sign advising audience members that silence is required, his entry fee entitles him to disregard the wishes of the majority and enjoy the evening of music HIS way ...ie to talk throughout. I told him that I was in no way responsible for the audiences reaction to his talking ( although I was surprised that it seemed to have no effect ) , and that I wished I had refunded his money and sent him on his way. He said he wished that I had too as he hadnt enjoyed the atmosphere, and would like a refund despite having stayed the entire evening ! I refunded his money, but I also snatched back his flyer remarking that he wouldnt need it as he wont be coming again, will he ? ( I probably glared at him at this point in a none-too-threatening manner ) I know I should just shrug my shoulders and forget about it, but thats not how my head works, of course, so its been on a repeat loop most of the night. I admit that I DO ask for quiet from the audience at the Grapevine @ Bedfords, Norwich nights. Its an intimate listening night and our attentive audience is rewarded by very special performances in which artists sometimes play songs they havent played for ages, or go unplugged and stand in the middle of the room, just because theres a comfortable and supportive atmosphere that sparks such magic and spontaneity.Thats our style, and its worked for 7 years now and, I make no apology for that at all, but would like to apologise to anyone who felt I was a little grumpy last night. Now you know why !
