Ive decided I must be broken. As a guitar player I really do suck. I have no idols. Today is Claptons birthday. Goodie for him. Its nice to make it to 69 I hope I do too. My uncle is a helluva musician and hes turning 80 something in July! But so what, who the hell is Clapton? Ok, albums, tours, blah, blah, but who IS he? Maybe just a guy in the right place at the right time. Ive met loads of dudes who play better than he does and they drive a forklift, make furniture, and play with their kids...I think theyre pretty awesome too. As for me, I could give a rats ass about famous people. Theyre famous, and they did something, but never think it was magic. Theres always a price and the only thing they should be famous for is paying it. True, they entertain, but should it be any more valued than a dude who can reattach a severed limb, or someone who can create steel dinosaurs for moving mountains ( I still think an excavator is artistic genius). Not that music doesnt move us, but its big business, huge business, and it is about sales, not necessarily moving the Earth, then again, money makes the world go round, right? I much prefer music on a small local scale. These are my heroes. The people who sing because they feel like it and with little reward. My family were and are all musicians. At our house it was no big deal except for huge fun after supper on a Friday night. I dont know, I guess I am broken. Couldnt give a crap if I gig or not but I sure love the sound of a Tele through a 2x12 or the sad howling song of a metal tricone on its last breath. I never record, dont necessarily think anyone wants to hear it, other than me. I dont mind teaching though...passing this feeling on is awesome. I also love the big band...these people are heroes! Chopping through Duke Ellington purely for the love is a lot of work! Yet, we just love that gig, all of us, and theres no big heads there. As for gear, does it really matter if its an American Fender, or whatever? Shit no. Theres a zillion guitars out there and its what you make of them. So follow your own groove, then go come up with something new! Im sure not many people have read this far, but for those of you who have, maybe youre inclined to think for yourselves as well, and I applaud you for it. Lets wish everybody a happy birthday, yourselves included. Life is no easy feat and we should be proud of every passing year like a milestone. Happy Birthday Mr. Clapton, and Uncle John, and me coming up in a few months, and you too....were all equally awesome.
