Ive decided to set this blog up so I can communicate ideas and theories that Ive been developing in my own time, since beginning my Politics and Sociology course at the University of Brighton. Ive been exploring ideas surrounding Localism, Marxist-Libertarianism and have been inspired by such concepts as Rousseaus Social Contract, Mills understanding of freedom of expression and how democratic participation is enhanced at a local level. E.F. Schumacher and Kirkpatrick Sale have also helped me to understand how the local or small can be an important aspect of establishing a creative and socially/environmentally aware society. I dont wish to establish my overall political positioning as I believe this is dangerous for progression, an open mind is important to be able to perfect ones argument. However, I do believe in the process of decentralisation as it can improve individual liberty, whilst simultaneously, promoting the equality of all human beings. The most important sociological thinkers: Marx, Durkheim and Weber all have strengths and limitations, it is therefore difficult to announce a particular alliance with one of them. For example, Marxs criticism of the exploitative nature of capitalism is important for the discussion into how we can get rid of this oppression, however there are various aspects/forms of capitalism that can be attributed to the development of communal sustainability such as the Transition Network, a social movement that supports local not corporate business. The same can be said for Durkheim, his concept of the need for social solidarity and collective communities is a commendable position to take, however his branch of sociology Functionalism, is responsible for the negative traditional ideals which dehumanise welfare claimants and undermine womens freedom of choice. Overall, I hope you enjoy the blog Ive set up and the various posts I put up! Any questions, please dont hesitate to ask, I want this to create debate! elijahpryor.blogspot.co.uk/#!
