Ive dropped a bomb on my beloved fantasy world of Nemmerle. Long have I pondered the idea of starting all over - the scale of the world was wrong, the geography didnt lend itself to the imagination, the complexity of detail was hard to rework because it didnt feel as if it was living in the correct home. I have taken the high-res outline maps and scaled them to 2.5X the size. While this may seem extreme, it gives me a LOT more room for regions of wonder, places that arent settled and domesticated, and forced me to re-think how each region has its own personality. Ive spent a lot of time researching other worlds and their relative scales and diversity - I think Im ready now. The tools I developed in the last five years have been very helpful as I can now drag and drop many elements into the new world. Went to Kinkos and had them produce a new 36 wide map with the outlines and sat at an old wooden table in the garage with a pencil to refashion the world - had to get away from too many computer tools. The process begins with a lot of promise, but I have to remain faithful to the feel of each region and what its role is. It feels good to see it come together in a much more hospitable environment for me to write and create.
