Ive got a math problem for all of you intellectual types out there (be careful, there are lots of numbers included just to throw you off!): Problem: Lindsay (my wife) visits the ER after complaints of chest and back pain. Four (4) hours later, after multiple (3) X-rays, a (1) Cat-scan, 7 vials of blood, 2 vials of other, and a few (2) IVs of morphine, shes sent home and told to heal from a bad case of double-lung pneumonia. Six (6) weeks later we receive a bill from the hospital, which includes the following information: TOTAL AMOUNT OWED TO ER: $13,929.20 TOTAL INSURANCE PAYMENTS: $3,014.60 INSURANCE/PATIENT DISCOUNTS: $10,839.60 BALANCE DUE: $75.00 (our co-pay) Question: What is the REAL cost of the treatment that Lindsay received? Is it: a. $13,929.20 -- the total cost of all supplies, facilities, and labor b. $3,014.60 -- the total amount that our insurance company paid c. $10,839.60 -- the amount that was not charged to the insurance company, but would presumably have been charged to me if we did not have said insurance d. $75 -- the amount we pay in exchange for paying incredibly high monthly insurance premiums e. NONE of the Above -- the whole system is whack and run by criminals and theres no way in hell that people in Costa Rica pay any of these amounts for equitable medical care (Be sure to show your work to support your answer. And if there are any references to Obamacare fixed it, or a health care system that functions properly or how its supposed to be or reasonably... then your answer is automatically INCORRECT.)
