Ive got a story for everyone brave enough to discuss privilege in science and engineering fields, and thanks to Yan for sharing some enlightening posts and responses on the topic. When I was a researcher at the techie university KNUST in Ghana, I met a Muslim teenager who attended a lecture on the Higgs Boson with her high school class. She wore a headscarf and her complexion was very dark, and we ended up talking afterward about particle physics. Then she asked me earnestly whether someone like her could study science-- she honestly didnt know if that was possible or if shed ever be accepted. Recognizing how were privileged is important, as is being (often brutally) honest and making the attempt to understand one another. Heres to creating a better world and equalizing opportunities for nerds everywhere.
