Ive got an open letter for everyone who attends League, please read it. We have 4 confirmed as going for the tournament this Thursday, and four maybes as of today. As some of you are aware, we need a minimum of 8 players for the tournament to happen, though Id love to see even more people. Share the word, spread information, and please, please attend. By reporting larger turnouts and participating, well have an even better chance of continuing to hold these tournaments in the future and keep our league going strong! Also, I have noticed a lack of desire for competition at League ever since X and Y came out. Ive heard many reasons why, whether its been that players are finding new games to play (much to my chagrin, but I understand), or they dont feel like competing, or they dont like not being able to use every Pokemon they can, but there is a reason for it. Much like being given a set of rules to guide your actions in most other games, or being restricted to using cards from certain sets in card games, competition will have some certain restrictions when playing in-format, and its not for the worse. The 2014 VGC format has been a lot of fun, and has been quite large and expansive. It doesnt permit certain Pokemon that might be your favorites, yes, and might restrict the moves you can use, but thats part of the challenge and excitement, so that Pokemon and the formats you see are never static, never boring, never predictable. And breeding in X and Y is amazing. Its incredibly easy, and the opportunities one has are fantastic. The Pokemon TCG is also an exciting game to play, its a great change of pace, and as far as card games are concerned, one of the best and most affordable games to play that is out now. We have a lot of tournament opportunities that have been given to us, whether being sanctioned tournaments, League Challenges, and now Premier Challenges, and with the potential to hold even bigger and more amazing things. Im not saying this to single anyone out or to make anyone feel bad, but Mitch Westrick, Darrin Cole, Nateal Erickson, Ben Nelson, Kevin Israel and I work very hard to make our Pokemon events bigger and more amazing each time, and weve had some very good times, and very good opportunities, but we also need you, the players, to help out by participating. We have the potential to be as big as Josh Massey s new league in Corpus Christi, with an average participation of 50 players a week, and with tournament participation in similar ranges. We could have some amazing things happen for us, provided we participate and become bigger and better. Also, competition makes you better players. By stagnating by feeling offended or perturbed by refusing to play by new rules, or by feeling apathy for tournaments that are a lot of time and effort on the parts of all the league administrators in town, you dont become better, you only stay the same or even become weaker players, and it hurts the energy and drive and growth potential of the league. Again, Im not singling anyone out or criticizing anybody, I just want you to think about this. All of us at Pokemon League, whether at my League or the League that Ben Nelson and Kevin Israel run on Sunday, or even the one in Grand Forks that Tanner Menzel organizes or the one in Bismarck being organized as we speak, are willing to help you. We want you to be better players, we want you to be the very best, like no one ever was. We love getting these opportunities for you, organized in our spare time for no compensation whatsoever, because we love this game and we want to give you all as great a time as we can.
