Ive got to hand it to tonights organizers. Tonight, although intended largely to be a chance to collectively grieve, and to disrupt the flow of a city to make everyone realize #BLACKLIVESMATTER, it was also a chance to collectively hope. I was there 7-11:30, and I just thought it had so many really powerful moments. Shouting BLACK LIVES MATTER as prisoners raised their fists in the air and flickered their lights as we stopped in front of the correctional facility was incredible. For them to be able to watch us confronted by a huge police barricade at the on ramp to the highway was highly moving for us, and I have no idea what they must have felt, but it cant have been bad. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. WE SEE YOU. It was very much in line with the teachings of Christ. The worst moment was when the leadership went silent at the first barricade. The police were also silent. Very tense moments. It was finally announced that we would go up Massachusetts Ave. That was again, incredible. The love and support from the cars was amazing. The people came out of their apartments and cheered and took pictures and smiled and chanted with us. The people in the cars smiled and gave us fist bumps and took pictures and honked their horns in support, honking in rhythm with our chants, even though they were completely stuck as thousands of folks walked around them, they were loving it. bus drivers & taxi drivers smiled and raised fists. It was a huge communal moment where everyone was realizing we are not alone. There is hope. I was so impressed with the folks who pulled this off. Really, really great stuff.
