Ive got two book recommendations for you guys this morning. Very different reads, but Im guessing 80% of my friends would enjoy one, the other, or both. First: Federation, by Judith Reeves-Stevens (1994). The first Star Trek novel Ive read since 8th grade or something. It tells a sweeping story that connects the original series, the Next Generation, and Zefram Cochrane living through the post-atomic horror familiar to Trekkies. The author does a breathtaking job at tying together myriad bits of Star Trek lore, injecting a surprising amount of hard science fiction, and the result is that the Trek universe seems as grounded, consistent, and real as it ever has. The author is brilliant at capturing the voices and personalities of each of the characters—hell, she even makes Counselor Troi serve a valid purpose. And its simply a very exciting read (you get to hear Captain Picard order Ramming speed). I could go on, but Ill stop. To the Trek lovers in the house, I cant recommend it highly enough. Second: Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons (1932). Holy CRAP why didnt anybody tell me about this book before. Its a parody of the British rural-tragedy genre popular at the time (think Thomas Hardy) and its laugh-out-loud funny. The prose is deliberately, incredibly over the top: He wore, as a protection from the rain, a hat which had lost – in who knows what dim hintermath of time – the usual attributes of shape, colour and size, and those more subtle race-memory associations which identify hats as hats, and now resembled some obscure natural growth, some moss or sponge or fungus, which had attached itself to a host. And so on. Its completely absurd and I loved it to pieces. Dry British humor 4eva. Go forth and read!
