Ive had a few friends ask me how they can take better photos and Im always happy to share what Ive learned. Here are eight simple things that you can do right away and Ill explain each of them a little more in the comments below. As Grandma said, however, free advice is worth exactly what you pay for it... 1) Take your camera with you. Youll miss a lot of opportunities if you leave that camera sitting at home. 2) Move beyond just taking snapshots to making photographs. Think about your lighting, subject, and background. Its all about the composition. Composition is where the magic happens. 3) Invest in a tripod. There are many new photographic possibilities that are only available at slower shutter speeds. A tripod will help get you there. 4) Turn off the time/date stamp. Seriously, unless youre taking police evidence photos at a crime scene it just clutters your image. 5) Explore beyond the Auto and Scene modes. Try the manual settings on your camera and see what it is capable of. You might never go back. 6) Following the Rule Of Thirds when composing your image makes a big difference in the result. Divide your image into thirds both vertically and horizontally. Try to place your subject at one of the intersecting lines. 7) Use post-processing to crop your photo as needed and to adjust for color, contrast and more. Googles free Picasa photo editor provides a nice set of tools for doing this. 8) Stop by your local library or browse the Internet for books and information on photography. There are lots of great tips and ideas out there! Digital cameras have taken a lot of the guesswork and expense out of photography and made it accessible to just about everyone. Once you get past the initial expense of the camera and equipment it is a pretty cheap hobby. Take lots of photos!
