Ive had some thoughts on my mind for quite some time, and I - TopicsExpress

Ive had some thoughts on my mind for quite some time, and I finally need to just put them out there to give everyone food for thought. Counting myself, my salon has three stylists/nail techs working in it. The other two are not my employees, they are independent contractors. They do not get paid any wages by me if theyre here and not working on clients, and on the flip side, if they made a million dollars a day, I get nothing but the flat monthly rental fee for them to use the space in my shop. There was a post on here of someone wanting their hair done ASAP. They even stated in the comments that they had an appointment today (Tuesday) at my shop. Someone that attended beauty school but never finished or obtained their license ended up doing that persons hair. It turned out very nice, since the after pictures were posted in this group. Thats all fine and great, but heres my point. The client didnt even have enough respect or courtesy to call and cancel the appointment with the girl in my shop it was booked with. We do have an answering machine, plus the shop was open on Saturday, so there is absolutely no excuse for not notifying us. This is not the first time this person has no showed for an appointment, but it was the last time she will be allowed to hold time on our books. Time is money, so not only did my stylist lose the money that an unlicensed person gained (which is a direct violation of the State Board of Cosmetology rules) she was unable to book someone in that time spot to offset the money lost. My salon enables three people to make money to support their households, and in turn support the economy in Molalla. We are required by state law to have a valid practitioners license in every field we offer services (hair, nails, skin), and/or a facility license, and/or an independent contractor license, and if a mobile technician, a free lance license. These are more than just pieces of paper, these help to give YOU, the CLIENT, piece of mind that we a) completed the state required education hours and passed the final exams, b) know and follow the safety and sanitation practices required by the state to ensure your health and safety, c) allow us exclusive access to purchase and use top quality products on our clients for their services, d) keeps us informed of latest breakthroughs in chemical formulations and technology, continuing education, along with product/service safety, concerns or other issues, and e) the support of the manufacturer of whichever professional product lines we choose to use. They also mean much more than just what Ive listed, but the bottom line is YOU, the CLIENT, are protected, and WE, the TECHNICIANS, are held to higher standards of accountability and responsibility. Plus you are supporting a local (legal) business, and when theres more successful businesses in town, more may want to come to our area. Everyone has the freedom to choose who they want to do their hair or nails. Just because someone has a license doesnt mean they will automatically be successful, or even good at what they do, just as someone without a license doesnt mean they dont know what theyre doing. Ive seen some great work by unlicensed stylists, recent post included, but good work or not, there are rules and regulations for a reason. So hopefully I gave some of you food for thought, and this is not specific to my industry alone. Im sure there are many people in this group that have a different career but see the same things happening in their profession. Im not wanting to take money out of anyones pocket, but unless youre legitimate, please stop taking it out of ours.
