Ive had this on my heart for the last several days, and what Im about to say, will probably make me the most hated person on Facebook, but I dont care. I feel strongly compelled to share this, and I say it because I love and care about others. Lately we have heard a lot about suicide it seems. Before you past judgment on what Im about to say, for those who may not know, I have experienced the hurt of losing a loved one to suicide. In our effort to console others left devastated by suicide, we say things like...they are in a better place...theyre not suffering anymore... theyre rejoicing in gloryland.....theyre dancing on streets of gold etc.. I read an article by Matt Welsh after Robin Williams committed suicide, and I agree with what he is saying. When we glorify suicide, how can we help others who are struggling with ending their own lives?! When we make remarks about others who committed suicide as being free and happy now, wouldnt statements like these drive someone who has already been struggling to not jump off the cliff, help push them off the ledge?! People who are suicidal are suffering; theyre in great pain and what relief. Please hear my heart! We had a well known man in our community that committed suicide; he had a huge following - young and old. I know people are suffering terrible grief over his loss. Ive grown greatly concerned while reading all the remarks people have written. What does it say to the youth that sat under his leadership who has been struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts? Im afraid that it is giving them the green light to follow through. People struggling with depression are not thinking clearly. I dont want to see anymore lives lost to suicide, it is a horrible pain I wish on no family. Please, please rethink the words you use when you speak of a life ended by suicide, because there are others in the shadow of depression listening. -Stacie
