Ive heard some people comment over the past few years (very few) about working out/bodybuilding being a vain and selfish activity...Moslty ive just chalked it up as these individuals being haters wishing they had the self discipline and courage to undertake something of this nature themselves.. But for those that truly feel this way, I offer you todays passage from my daily devotional Everyday With Jesus. The movie Chariots of Fire tells the story of Eric Lidell, a Scottish Christian born to missionary parents in China who competes for Gods glory on the track in the 1924 Olympics. After Eric misses a prayer meeting, his sister-- who disapproves of his athletic pursuits-- questions just how much his running really honors God. I believe that God made me for a purpose, Eric responds. But he also made me fast, and when I run, I feel his pleasure. The activities we enjoy are blessings from God. Liddell eventually returned to China and, upon his death, all of Scotland mourned. His was indeed a blessed life. Find those pursuits where you feel Gods pleasure--and you too will be blessed. Read Psalm 37:4 So you see, before one is critical of how another chooses to honor God or how that person uses his gifts to bless others, take a moment to consider that our journeys are not all alike and that we are all called to serve in different ways. No two people are identical and we all have unique gifts in which we are given to bless those who enter our lives. And that how one man feels Gods pleasure is really of no consequence to another because if it is from God then it brings joy into this world for that person and possibly for many..Regardless of whether it has that effect on us personally.. And who are we to question what brings joy into the life of another and/or thereby strengthens that mans relationship with God or the way in which that man shares Gods love with others. I believe when we feel the need to criticize others for their endeavors, (except in cases of causing harm to others) we would be well served to look within and take care of our own house/ ask ourselves if what we choose to spend our time doing honors God. And if the answer is yes to spend time praying that the people close to us are of maximum service to God in the way they choose to spend their days. And finally... Do you not know that your bodies are the temple of the holy spirit who is in you? Whom you have recieved from God. You are not your own, you are bought with a price, therefore honor God with your bodies. 1Corinthians 6:19-20
