Ive learned a few things about carbs since the weather got colder and Im driving a carbed vehicle daily. The choke is your best friend, and if set up wrong, will cause you a major headache. If, after 2-3 pumps, the car fires off immediately, runs for 1-2 seconds and then dies, verify your choke vacuum pull-off is set properly. On a cold engine.. Attach a vacuum pump to the diaphragm and pull 20-25. Using a drill bit, verify the choke butterfly pulls open the specified amount. On my Carter, the rebuild sheet listed that as 9/64. Adjust by bending the U-rod at the diaphragm. Once set, with vacuum still pulled, make sure the fast idle cam is securely on the second step. Any rebuild sheet has these instructions and a diagram. My choke plate would pull open too far once the engine fired and vacuum was generated, causing the mixture to lean out and kill the motor. This adjustment fixed the problem. Then a week later when it got colder, the engine would hardly start at all. Found the front manifold bolts loose. That fixed that issue. These things should be checked on the Motorcraft as well. Dont forget that the throttle must be pumped to the floor at least once to set the choke/high idle and to get some gas into the intake. Dont overdo it. Dont pump the gas when starting. You shouldnt have to. Great article on the topic here, with photos: jeepforum/forum/f8/choke-season-again-carter-bbd-choke-1288457/
