Ive made a discovery. I love Kotaku, and io9, and many other news pages within the Gawker network. ...and I freaking hate Jezebel. Holy crap oh my god. I wanted so badly to like a news website with a feminist tilt until they became so extreme with it that it was obnoxious. When io0 made a Woohoo, Lego finally put out a playset with three female scientists for the Research Institute line!, Jezebel didnt comment on the fact that it was a great addition, or that it was nice that Lego wasnt going crazy on the hey look, its girls, were equal opportunity! and just letting it be a given that there are female scientists... No, they flipped their crap over the fact there are little dark lines drawn on the sides of the plastic torsos to infer hourglass figures. Theyre still the same box shape as every other Lego figurine, but... they have little lines that infer an hourglass shape. Are you freaking kidding me? Seriously. Holy crap. Why is it that every sign of stereotypical femininity is an offense? How about the fact these are childrens toys, and young children thrive on stereotypes? The faster and easier it is for a child to identify a toy as female, the better. Im pretty sure a couple of lines on a trapezoidal torso arent going to give a girl body image issues. It no longer feels like Jezebel is making a serious argument on behalf of womens rights and depictions in the media, but instead actively searching for things to be upset about.
