Ive met three men who fought with Chesty Puller, one at Guadalcanal and two in Korea. When I said, Chesty Puller is either the greatest or the craziest man who ever lived, all three replied Both. Interestingly, though Chesty Puller is held in the highest regard by enlisted Marines, the officers Ive talked to did not like him. Their main complaint was He got too many people killed. Theyre probably right. Current Marine officers, though, did not have to fight the Japanese, who were without question the toughest enemy America has ever faced. Anyway, Happy Birthday, Chesty, Wherever you are. And the Marine Corps will roll.
