Ive never been a big Mariah fan(though theres no denying her tremendous vocal talent), but I will argue fervently with ANYONE who denies that this is one of the greatest, non-sacred, Christmas songs ever! This song brilliantly captures the spirit and feel of Christmas and is still as fresh and vibrant today as it was when it was released in November of 1994...TWENTY YEARS AGO. Its the perfect amalgam of early nineties Pop, R&B and Soul with a strong throwback vibe to both the Motown era and the classic Christmas recordings of the Fifties and Sixties. Plain and simple, Mariah(who actually co-wrote this track) nailed this one and gave us one of the very few modern Christmas songs that will stand the test of time. This entire album, Merry Christmas, is a perennial favorite that gets played every single year, here in the Norris house, and will continue to as long as I live. I love that this infectious and upbeat Pop song focuses on what REALLY matters at Christmas...its not about, Santa, Reindeer, Christmas Trees or presents...its about celebrating those we love and hold most dear...and realizing that they are the only gifts we need. In light of that, I dedicate this song to the one who still holds my heart, eleven years after she stole it... Baby, all I want for Christmas...is you. Indeed.
