Ive never been so afraid in my life. ... I survived, where so many people do not. Holy shit, I survived. Written by a stalking survivor who needed to use her firearm to defend herself when her stalker kicked in her door in the middle of the night. Lots of potential lessons here. For starters -- 1) A restraining order truly is just a piece of paper. But if you have a stalker, you *should* get that paper anyway. Not because it will prevent an attack (it probably wont), but because if your stalker does attack you, you will have a paper trail showing that you did your best to avoid ever, ever having to physically defend yourself. The fact of the restraining order can also, often, speed police response during a crisis -- all other things being equal. 2) To fight like a cornered cat means fighting with a goal in mind. That goal is SURVIVAL -- nothing more, nothing less, nothing else. She shot her attacker in the chest because it was the fastest way to stop his attack. She stopped shooting when he turned and ran, because the attack was over. She did not shoot to kill or to wound. She shot to stop the attack. She shot to live! Evidence of this kind of mindset shows up in another quote from her story: I do not know if he is living, but I do know the police have him and thats what helps the most. Right on! 3) Going to quote her own words about warning shots, because shes right on target: ... a gun is a deadly force, you only pull that trigger if you are in fear for your life and all other methods of deterring are gone. ... Warning shots are dangerous and could hurt the unintended. This is not a wild west movie. Thats what responsible gun ownership is. Again, RIGHT ON! Im glad shes alive, and sorry she had to go through this. Hope her healing process goes smoothly through the aftereffects of this crisis, and that her stalker never bothers her again.
