Ive never had a job where they needed to see the actual, physical copy of my Social security card. Most are all, Oh you know your number and have your ID? Cool, we can verify that. Our HR guy goes, Oh no biggie, just go by the office and they can give you a letter of validation. Cool, so I go to do that. Im processed and literally like a minute, and the guy goes, Here, give them this brochure, and they can follow the directions to verify online. Hr guy goes to do that, only to tell me that they actually have to have either a) a physical copy of the card or b) a physical copy of said receipt. So he calls the SS Office... Who in turn tells him, that they do not print those anymore, and that they have moved to a paperless system. HR for the whole company says that they HAVE to have the physical copy in 72 hours from the paperwork day (so they dont risk a VERY pricey fee by the government), or Ill have to be reprocessed (when I get my card in the mail, in 7-14 business days). Nevermind the fact that theyve already VERIFIED that its my SS number with the online system, and they KNOW that Im legit-- they just need that paperwork. Were not sure where my Birth Certificate is-- my mother couldnt find it and I tore apart our house trying to find it, and since I have no passport, my SS card is the ONLY form of documentation that I can use. The government website, the LA government website AND the current I-9 form that we used ALL STATE, that you can be issued such a receipt, allowing up to 90 days to present the actual form of documentation. And yet... the office says they dont do that anymore, and that the online thing should be enough to satisfy my employer. l sat on hold with the SS Administration and hour before I realized that they wouldnt answer. So, Im going into the office AGAIN tomorrow, to demand this receipt that they say they can give me, because ILL BE DAMNED TO LOSE THIS JOB, BECAUSE OF POOR COMMUNICATION, POLICY CHANGES AND STUPID GOVERNMENT FINES. I really dont think that I have EVER been this flippin angry in my ENTIRE life.
