Ive never posted anything political on Facebook, and hopefully this is as close as Ill come to doing so. As people who spend the majority of their lives traveling, we have the rare opportunity to come into intense, short-term contact with a myriad of cultures and human beings. The one thing Ive learned is that a nations government and a nations people are two very separate things. [Im fully aware that entering a culture as a band gives you a bit of an advantage as a visitor - people are more likely to be friendly, hospitable, etc.] Judging a population by the actions of their rulers is unfair- I would never want to be associated personally with the atrocities of my own countrys government (of which there are many, both recent and more distantly historical) and it would be both hypocritical and short-sighted to do the same to anyone else. Its a beautiful thing for a group of musicians to play a gig in a German bunker that was built to shelter normal people from Allied bombs. Its a beautiful thing to play on the banks of a river in a country that we almost came into nuclear conflict with during my own childhood and has perpetually been type-casted as the bad guy in Hollywood films for decades. No matter where we go, we find that people all over the world can agree on one thing: music is universal, and it brings us all together. I always try to remember that wherever you go in the world, you will find good people.
