Ive often found that the mental strategies that people have to employ to have consistency in the gym and their physical training practices are incredibly applicable to other goal-oriented or progress-driven aspects of life. Learning to work hard in the gym? You start learning how to work hard, period. This article came out today, and has some pretty good points Ive been trying to drive home for both clients and myself: t-nation/training/mental-strategies-for-getting-results My favourite point is the notion of doing what you like to do versus what you need to do to progress yourself in the direction that you want. If you have a creative vision for your bodys movement, strength, aesthetic, and health, then that creative vision must be matched by appropriate action. As an artist, you wouldnt draw a giraffe if you had a commissioned painting of an orangutan, because hey, you really like drawing giraffes. Or as a musician, you wouldnt play in your favourite minor key when writing an upbeat feel-good song (unless you were really creative and made it work somehow). This isnt about good versus bad. Its about identifying behaviours that take you further away from your goals or displace more productive behaviours. We all take the pleasurable path sometimes, but theres a deep satisfaction in discipline as well. This reminder was rather timely for me... maybe it will be for you as well ;)
