Ive posted a few items about President Obamas incorrect salute and done some reading. here is my take on the subject. A salute is not given to the person, it is given to the uniform and rank of the wearer. It shows respect. The President is Commander In Chief of the Military, he is given a salute but usually the President is not a military officer in uniform and therefor is not supposed to return the salute. President Reagan asked high ranking officials about returning the salute because the military members would be standing for a while, not knowing when to drop their arm. Reagan was told that as Commander in Chief, while a civilian, no one would complain if he returned the salute. There are those who may differ with that opinion, HOWEVER, the President, or any civilian rendering a salute to a military person, even a private, may be inappropriate in a military sense, it does show a form of respect to that person who is serving and puts their life on the line. Thus the President could salute the uniform (in essence, the branch of the military) as a way of saying Thank You For Your Service, rather than as others thing as a Your welcome For Your Salute. However you look at the subject, whether you agree that the President should or should not return a salute given, I propose that IF he returns the salute, it should be a proper salute. That is my opinion.
