Ive pulled out 2 classics by Aldous Huxley, Brave New World & the follow-up, Brave New World Revisited to read while confined to my house in this heat. I read the intro & bio by David Bradshaw, Worcester College, Oxford, 1993 & the foreword by Huxley in 1946 in this edition of BNW & it is scarily applicable in todays world, in todays Australia. Reading them, I realised how much my proposed novel, working title, The Enclave, is similar in dark foreboding. Although Huxley was a very different person to me (Im a committed Keynesian & he was very anti social-conscience economics), we both fear for our future worlds, for the societies our children will inherit from the course these world economically focussed governments are travelling. The original plan was to write something like A Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich by Solzhenitsyn, but I didnt want to write such a dark literary novel & a single day wouldnt be long enough when I have so much more I want to put across from my social conscience viewpoint (& I dont think I could pull off a literary novel anyway). The original novel idea came about because of this fascist Liberal Government under Tony rAbbott, but the plan / outline grew to be as it is, more akin to BNW. I havent read BNW for 4 decades & hadnt realised the similarities (& the differences) my story had with it, but I am looking forward to enjoying both books this weekend.
