Ive read lots of comments lately about how the nasty old farmer is destroying the PEI environment. People should think about their own actions. One of the challenges farmers have is with the increased frequency of heavy rain events that is a direct result of climate change. What is one of the main contributors of climate change? It is the internal combustion engine. How many people who complain about farmers have a motorcycle, snowmobile, boat, ATV (there are 10,000 of these on PEI alone) muscle car or RV? These are nothing but TOYS that are extremely inefficient users of fuel! Not to mention the environmental impact of creating and transporting these toys to their owners. How many people would give them up to help reduce climate change? How many people complain about the farmers impact on the environment while they fly south to enjoy a vacation on a resort that was cut out of the jungle and covered with concrete. Where food and booze is trucked thousands of miles so we can enjoy food that we are familiar with. Golf is a game enjoyed by many Islanders. I hate golf but I was on a course a while ago for a function and I remarked to the owner how green it was despite PEI having a very dry July and early August. He said, We have an irrigation system and we used well over a million gallons lately to have it look like this. People love it and they congratulate me for the way the course looks. Our business is way up. I bet these same people do not want farmers to irrigate. The Diamond lady who was on the front page of the paper complaining about her farm neighbour saying she was terrified of pesticides. Her neighbours are 6th generation family farmers who call her every time they apply a spray. She had no problem trespassing onto the farmers field for a photo op. And guess what, she brought her daughter with her and allowed her daughter to walk in the supposedly pesticide laden potato field with shorts and flip flops on. Does this sound like someone who is rational? The City of Charlottetown has killed fish for years by drying up the Winter River by extracting too much water for it residents. How do they deal with this? Do they get the residents to reduce their water usage. NO! They use millions of public dollars to dig new wells in another watershed so folks can continue wasting as they always have. That nasty old farmer better change!
