Ive read posts and pseudo-news items about the supposed Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse Monday Night/Tuesday Morning. To put it plain and simple, I hate this type of non-scientific CRAP! As someone who worked as an assistant astronomer and Senior Observer for 22 years and is the founder and director of Wagman Observatory, I have had to deal with this fabricated garbage for 40 years. Its not the Apocalypse or any other end of the world, zombie misinformation. The color of the Moon during an eclipse is determined by the amount and type of debris in the Earths Atmosphere. If theres a great deal of volcanic ash floating around, the Moon can almost disappear from view. I have seen this before. Ive observed, orange, yellow, gray and, yes, even reddish Lunar Eclipses. Astronomers dont use the type of jargon that has been spread around about next weeks event. Its a Total Lunar Eclipse and thats all it is. Its a normal celestial occurrence, though it doesnt happen every month or every year, many of us have watched 15 or more or them in our lifetime. There are too many people with a little knowledge of astronomy (very little) who have made up names and implied certain connotations to normal astronomical events. I will no longer, nor have I ever, tolerate them. Astronomy rant # 666.
