Ive read with interest and it just seems to me like a lot of animals are dying lately. For the first time in 11 years, I had 3 losses this year. The first girl was fine one day and dead the next. That was almost a year ago and the necropsy was inconclusive. The second loss was my little failure to thrive boy that was 7 months at the end of July. The third girl was just a year old. She had always been healthy as a horse. It was a Sat 9/13 and she just didnt act like she was feeling good. I had done a fecal on Sat and she had 259 strongyles and 5 nematodes. We did support care and were shocked to find her dead on Tues 9/16 morning. Neither my 7 month old nor the year old had the neck curl. All of these alpacas were eating off pasture. None of them refused to stand. By checking eyes and teeth we found that about 50% of our herd was anemic. We have 23 alpacas on 10 acres and had beautiful pastures this year. We are also a closed farm meaning that alpacas dont come and go. We did have a lot of rain and standing water in our pasture. So via vet we treated the whole herd with levamisole on 9/21. We have done 3 days of oxtetracycline. We dont have a dry lot setup and we move them around to which ever pasture has the best grass. They are now getting supplemented with grain and I started them on 2cc of red cell tonight. The oxytetracycline comes out really slow unless I use an 18 gauge needle. I feel like they are becoming pin cushions. To add to my concerns, we are leaving Mon for 2 weeks. What gauge needle do you guys use for oxy? If you did dry lot, when would the pasture be safe? Ill be doing fecals in 10 days and redosing if necessary.
