Ive said it before, and Ill say it loud again. If another demographic of our society was experiencing what Black people go through, if the members of another demographic were shot, unarmed, by the cops at a rate of twice a week, every week, forever, ad infinitum, would the publics response be different? Lets say, for sh*ts and giggles, this police brutality was happening to white gay men. Lets imagine how the response would be if an unarmed gay Caucasian man was shot to death by the police every 56 hours (every 28 hours, if you counted the armed men too), every 56 hours like clockwork. Would people be marching nationwide, demanding change, and marching and rallying until someone took notice? Would people call out the system as corrupt, evil, frightening, wrong-headed? Or would they urge for patience and understanding in the face of this genocide? Would most of the nation turn away from them, pretending to believe that the horror isnt so bad - not noticing or even caring - if white, gay men were being gunned down WITH REGULARITY in a long-time, persistent, no-end-in-sight cycle of police brutality? Or would these beleaguered Caucasian LGBT victims find overwhelming support? With vocal insistence that the wicked, murderous system be changed now, immediately, and with great rebuke? Because I do honestly believe that this would be the case. But because we are Black, it is much too uncomfortable, unthinkable, unappealing to stand with us in solidarity.
