Ive scheduled a contractor to come out tomorrow morning for some much-needed repairs on my garage foundation, but Im starting to have some serious reservations. They were supposed to be here this morning, but never showed, and when I finally called at about 4 this afternoon, the guy said he had taken extremely ill, along with his entire crew, and apologized for not calling. I noted that they only have one review on YP, and its negative. They dont show up in an Angies List search due to an unspecified licensing issue. Their license does show up as current on L&Is website, but there is no record of any savings account or employees there. So I called back and apologized for bothering him again, but told him of my concerns. He knew exactly which YP review I was talking about, and explained that by saying the homeowner had left town and they couldnt get inside to do some portion of the work. He said L&I doesnt have a record of his employees, because 1) he uses an independent payroll company, or 2) he uses like a temp agency for construction workers, or both -- it wasnt clear. He mentioned both, but then told me he doesnt use subcontractors -- even though during my earlier call, he said the guy he was going to send today probably wouldnt be well enough to work tomorrow, but he knew somebody else he could get out here to do it. When I questioned his measurements, he said he didnt have my bid in front of him, because he was in Seattle! (The company address, and presumably his home, is in Lakewood.) I thought he was sick....?
