Ive seen a lot of posts lately about the new Graph App on Facebook, and because of the app anyone can see your photos. There are many variations on this post, and it seems that every time Facebook rolls out something new we go through this, but the common point is that to stop this invasion of privacy I must turn off some setting on my end in order to keep the world from seeing your posts and private (usually putting my mouse over your picture, clicking Friends, then Settings then un-checking whatever is the current culprit). Normally I wouldnt care, but I am being un-friended by people for not complying with this. I really dont want that to happen so Im hoping, at least in my own circle of friends, to keep this from happening. So, to start with, this loss of privacy is completely untrue. And the fix proposed does NOTHING but keep posts off MY OWN NEWS FEED (it doesnt change any privacy settings). It does nothing to share or limit your posts or pictures to the public. To see this better you can view your Activity Log by going to your own timeline and clicking Activity Log (located somewhere on your cover photo). There you can see what youve done (posts, likes, comments, etc.) and who can see that. The interesting thing is that if you were to post something that only your friends can see, when I like that post only YOUR friends can see that I liked it. On the flip side, if you post something that the PUBLIC sees then the public will see my like on that post. I cannot change who sees that post, its completely up to YOU when you originally do your post. Doesnt matter whos tagged, comments, or likes the post the privacy doesnt change. Now we get to the true privacy issue. If I post a picture of YOU and tag you in it, then I have the control over the privacy of that post. I can share that with the public, or my friends, or a custom list of people, but I have control over MY post, even if youre tagged in it. You can remove your tag from the post, and you can report the post to try to get it removed, but you cant control the actual post or the privacy settings that I have chosen. So really, there are a couple things that you SHOULD do. First, make sure you are sharing posts with who you want. This is found at the bottom of the text box for the post where you can choose Public, Friends, Custom List, etc. If you dont want the post or photo to be out there for the public to see then you have the control! Second, if you are concerned about what your friends post you should request that if your friends are going to tag you in a post or photo make sure the original post is shared with friends instead of public. This can be changed after the fact as well, so if there is a photo or post that you just dont want out there for ANYONE to see then talk to your friend and ask them to either take it down or change the privacy settings on the post. Remember, you can also report it to Facebook if you need to. Wow, this is probably the longest post Ive ever done on Facebook so this should tell you that if you are my friend on Facebook I want to stay your friend on Facebook. Dont let false information scare you into un-friending me!!
