Ive seen this posted a few places. I think it is a red herring. If the programmer of the driverless car wants to reduce auto-related fatalities, and their car is, in fact, a superior driver to the average human who might buy the driverless car, then whether the car kills 2 or 1 in the limited scenario mentioned is far less important than how the cars behaviors influence the adoption of the technology. Most people wont buy a car programmed to intentionally kill them in an accident. So, from the perspective of utilitarian considerations, it would make more sense for the car to be locally selfish for the owner, so that more people are willing to purchase the car.
