Ive shared before, and I make no apology for sharing again. The NHS is an institution that must be fought for, preserved and upheld. The cost of providing free healthcare at the point of delivery for all from the cradle to the grave is as nothing compared to the cost of the privation that would ensue, as the have nots dwindle and suffer for lack of money to pay for vital treatments. My father remembers receiving bread and dripping for his tea. My grandmother remembered children disappearing from her street during outbreaks of illness we wouldnt even recognise today, but that would without doubt return if we lost this most precious service. May I suggest to the powers that be, that the costs of the NHS, that you bemoan, are largely due to ineffective management and failure to devolve vital decision making, and resource allocation to those who have direct contact with their patient group, and the insistence on the setting up of endless quangos whose researches and studies tell you what you want to hear in order to continue their own funding and cushy jobs, rather than reporting what they see infront of them. I remember walking into work one day to see the bollards being painted at 6.30 am just because the Health Secretary was visiting that day. Patients were not permitted to leave the wards during the visit. The illustrious visitor was not taken to the wards either. All of this apparently to secure a star rating, meaningless. The earning of star ratings became more important than ensuring there were sufficient numbers on duty, ensuring that the environment was safe and conducive to healing. For goodness sake I was once even berated for ordering water for the patients cooler dispensers during a heat wave. Management preferred the patients to go thirsty, on their medication, so dangerous, than to pay a copper coin for water; yet they could spent copiously on hosting lavish lunches, management fact finding outings, decorating their offices, creating superfluous jobs, the list goes on of where money is really being wasted in the NHS. Beneft cuts and service cuts are just so short sighted!
