Ive shared numerous examples of police brutality in the past (including most of those referenced in the article) and definitely agree with the prescribed policy changes recommended at the end of the article. But on a more basic level, I think Police culture needs to change. The burden for an officer to use deadly force shouldnt be that they think or feel that theyre in danger - they should have to actually be in danger. I know thats a tough thing to ask of the police, but police knowingly sign up for a job that is dangerous - where you put your life on the line to protect and serve the community. So, it shouldnt come as any surprise that your life may be in danger as a part of your job and should not be a valid excuse for taking the life of a community member youre supposed to protect.
