Ive spoken to a few friends recently who have decided NOT to take the promotion at work, NOT to take more money and NOT to climb the corporate ladder. No, theyre not crazy, they just realize that with all of these pros comes the cons of having to work more (usually at a career that they dont necessarily care too much about) and do less of the things that they love and really value like taking care of their health, community, relationships and having hobbies. They dont Live to Work, they Work to Live. They realize the interconnectedness (is that even a word?) of the Three Ps of life (Professional life, People life/relationships and Personal life) and they believe that Success at Work does not always mean promotions and making more money and definitely does not mean Success in Life. I do not believe that working less is the answer to everything, everyone and for every phase of your life (OSAP is definitely not paying for itself!) and being broke doesnt help anyone. But in a place like Toronto where many people often value just working, its easy to get caught up in this and forget about our other responsibilities and what Success in Life means. Every person has to figure out what this means to them and to make choices that are congruent to this. But the only way to answer this is by determining your Values/what means the world to you.
