Ive started reading the comments from the book by Gregory #Heisler mentioned in a previous post. I was struck by one line in his introduction - A portrait is never not a surprise to the sitter, accustomed to the daily scrutiny of his or her likeness in the mirror. Not only does that likeness appear backwards, we as portrait photographers look to see more than a likeness. Im complimented enormously when someone says theres something about that picture that just captures (fill in the name), because I know Ive gone beyond the likeness.
